Was Judi Dench ever young? We know she was born and presume she must have been a young girl back in the 30's & 40's (although
there may be few left who can claim to be a eye witness to those events). American audiences have only become familiar with
her through her films work in the last decade so it seems to us she popped into being fully matured.

As if singlehandedly setting out to prove that actresses aren't necessarily finished when they reach A Certain Age, Dame Judi
Dench achieved her greatest fame and loudest plaudits while in her mid-sixties. Formerly known as one of the UK's finest
Shakespearians, once she'd taken to screen acting in earnest she was continually Oscar-nominated, for her roles in Mrs Brown,
Shakespeare In Love, Chocolat, Iris and Mrs Henderson Presents, and this despite a general aversion to film-making. Dench has
stated that, in films, people are cast primarily because they LOOK like a character, whereas on stage, in an hour and a half,
she has the opportunity and ability to convince the audience she is whatever she chooses to be. THAT's acting.

In those rare instances when she did act in films as a young woman, Dench often delivered remarkable performances. She was
memorable as a young wife in the little-seen "Four in the Morning" (1965) and was majestic as Titania in Peter Hall's filming
of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1968).

A long-revered stage and screen star in her native England, Tony- and Oscar-winning thespian Dame Judi Dench is known for
playing strong-willed women in positions of authority. She began her career on the stage and is equally adept at comedy and
the classics. She's earned critical acclaim and award nominations too numerous to list.

Dench attended Mount School in York, and studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She has performed with Royal
Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, and at Old Vic Theatre. She is a five-time BAFTA winner including Best Actress in a
Comedy Series for "A Fine Romance" in which she appeared with her husband, Michael Williams, and Best Supporting Actress in "A
Handful of Dust" and "A Room with a View". She received an ACE award for her performance in the television series "Mr. and
Mrs. Edgehill". She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1970, and was created Dame of Order of the
British Empire in 1988.
