After a week-long shoot at the family-theme fun park Water Wizz of Cape Cod and
star-studded wrap party at Felt Nightclub on Saturday, Aug. 15. The film doesn't
officially wrap until Friday, but the "Grown Ups" gang threw themselves a little party to
celebrate the summer-long shoot. The VIP crowd included cast mates Adam Sandler
(and wife Jacqueline), Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James, Colin Quinn, Norm
MacDonald, and Maya Rudolph, as well as chef Todd English. About a group of high-
school buddies who reunite after 30 years away, the movie directed by Dennis Dugan
was mostly shot in Essex and elsewhere on the North Shore. We're told Sandler, in
particular, is sorry to be returning to LA. The "Billy Madison" actor, who grew up in
Manchester, N.H., enjoyed his rental house next to the Eastern Point Yacht Club
in Gloucester so much that he's offered to buy it from the owner. As one of Hollywood's
highest-paid actors - he earned an estimated $65 million last year - Sandler can
certainly afford the oceanfront manse. Though he's a big movie star, Sandler didn't act
like a diva, according to locals. He often played basketball at the Gloucester YMCA, and
was a regular at Long Beach Dairy Maid, the Chinese restaurant Dragon Light, and at
Frank's Sub Zone, where owner Frank Carini hung a framed poster for Sandler's latest
flick "Funny People." "Nice guy," says Carini, who served the actor steak tips. "We don't
get a celebrity like him in here very often."
Crews for the made-in-Massachusetts flick "Grown Ups" are finishing up production this
week with a shoot at an elaborate set on the "neck" in Marblehead located at a private
residence located at 100 Harbor Avenue.
While many of the film’s scenes had been shot some 17 miles north in Essex, the
action for two days shifted to the Marblehead home of Dan and Meredith Doherty on
Harbor Avenue, which was turned temporarily into a Beverly Hills-style mansion, palm
trees and all. The crew even constructed a temporary L-shaped addition to the home
and erected a giant, gated entranceway covered with rose-colored flowers, all of
which were fake, of course. Set designers constructed the facade outside of the French-
Spanish colonial-style house for a scene scheduled to film on Tuesday, Aug. 18 and
Wednesday, Aug. 19. Tents are reportedly set up at Riverhead Beach as well as the
parking lot at Marblehead High School.
The scene was originally scheduled to be shot on Thursday, Aug. 6 and Friday, Aug. 7,
but was postponed.
"Grown Ups," set in Connecticut during a Fourth of July weekend, is a comedy about
five high school friends who reunite with their families during the summer at a lake
house after 30 years apart and stars Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider,
David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maria Bello and Maya Rudolph.
The release date of the ultimate buddy flick, which filmed a majority of its scenes at
Chebacco Lake and Centennial Grove located 30 Martin St. in Essex, has been moved
from March 12 to the more promising Friday, June 25 theatrical debut.
