Alaska, The Great Land Into the Wild - My great Alaskan Railroad Adventure
|
We had a Jet boat safari in the afternoon. Saw a couple Bald Eagles - no other wildlife. Above you can see the Bald Eagles nest. In the first pic the
eagle is sitting out on the branch to the left of the nest. In the second pic you can see the eagle's head poking out of the center of the nest.
Visited a Dena'ina indian encampment and an authentic trappers cabin. Saw various furs the trapper caught this past season. Below - My dad waits in
the boat while I go explore. There's a caribou skull and antlers resting up against a tree.
The black bear (hide seen below) was shot by the tour boat owner. The tour guide told us they had black bear burgers at the company BBQ
this spring. He never explained about the grizzly pelt hanging up. Below I hold the grizzly's hand.
Above right: One of the several cabins the tour boat owner uses during his winter hunting trips. He moves from one to the next to the next while he hunts and
traps. He actually lives in these tiny one room shacks with no plumbing, electricity, or modern conveniences of any kind. He and his wife lived in these cabins
year round when they first came to Alaska (I think it was 15 years ago?). They lived this way for several years but when she got pregnant they decided (meaning
SHE decided) that they couldn't raise children in this sort of environment so they bought a real house and a jet-boat and he started his tour business.
To the left is the cache that is next to the cabin (the cabin would be directly behind the tour guide just a few feet out of the
frame). This cache acts as storage and a sort of refrigerator. They keep their supplies in there as well as their kills. They
remove the ladder and that prevents bears and wolves from getting at their food.
To the right they desplay many of the furs the owner got this past season. Although you can't see them there are bear,
beaver, fox, hare, squirrel and other native animal skins. The people wouldn't move out of the way long enough for me to get
a picture of the whole lot.
